What is counseling and psychotherapy?
Counseling and psychotherapy provide you with a safe, confidential place to talk about your life and anything that may be confusing, painful or uncomfortable. We are trained to listen attentively and to help you move forward and improve things.
Not all counselors and psychotherapists work in the same way: there are different approaches. Research has shown that the therapeutic relationship between you and your practitioner is more important than the methods they use. Before beginning to work with you, your practitioner will usually ask you to complete a form or attend an appointment to decide if you feel comfortable about working together.
Counseling and psychotherapy is not advice giving and it is not a quick cure. Your practitioner will work with you to help you to see or approach things in different ways and make changes.
You may come from a non-English speaking background, but be unable to find a practitioner who speaks your language. English is the common language of communication in today's world. Many of the practitioners listed on this website have a great deal of experience working with speakers of other languages, and all understand first hand the challenges of moving countries.
